Seizures

This morning, Truitt finally had one single episode. Sure enough, it was a seizure. Our fears were confirmed but we weren't surprised. I knew they were probably seizures. With each one he had over the past week it became more apparent that it was much more than involuntary muscular movements.

Even though I was praying he was still seizure free, I was so glad they caught it on the EEG and we were able to go home after just 24 hours. They are Tonic Seizures he is having, a very common type with his brain injury and not too concerning. We caught them very early, the doctors were impressed with how quickly we acted.

As far as treatment for these seizures, the Neurologists increased his dose of Topamax and we will leave the Phenobarb at the new lower dose of 3 ml's for now. We will see how he does with that and then continue weaning the Phenobarb at a later date, once he is seizure free and stable for at least two months.

I asked the Neurologists if they thought he was having these seizures because of the weaning. They said we will probably never know. Good chance it was somewhat related to it, but also could have just been coincidence. Since his Phenobarb dose was so low to begin with, the chance of break through seizures with such slow weaning is slim. But...it happens. The brain is crazy. It is more common for children like Truitt to have break through seizures during growth spurts, which he is probably growing given his age. Toddlers are ALWAYS growing.

So whatever the cause, we will treat it accordingly and hope and pray he remains seizure free for as long as he can. Oh, and we are SO glad to be home :)
